Midsummer Night Swing: Sisterhood of Swing

The 2018 dance season in Damrosch Park kicks off with an all-star, all-woman big band led by “the shining hope of hot jazz” Bria Skonberg (New York Times), with jazz violin legend Regina Carter, powerhouse clarinetist Anat Cohen, and some of the jazz world’s best musicians. When this Sisterhood rips into a set of classic swing, you will have no option but to rise up and experience the joy of a night dancing under the stars. The band’s inspiration? The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the first integrated, all-female swing band that Earl Hines once praised as “the first Freedom Riders.”

Join The Dysfunctional Swingers for their very first swing dance party in the Dysfunctional Collective house on Governors Island! Enjoy a fine summer’s eve dancing in a beautiful old officer’s house, complete with front porch and rocking chairs in an escape from the usual city life. We’ll be groovin to the sounds of the 30’s and 40’s. All levels of dancers are welcome!
Basic Lesson at 6:30
Dance starts at 7:00
Ends at 9:30 so you can catch the last ferry back at 10:00

There isn’t running water in the house, so bring something to wet your whistle, although there will be some water available. Snacks provided.

Cait and the Critters headlines, with The Buck and a Quarter Quartet opening, at Brooklyn’s finest stage, Jalopy Theatre and School of Music, 315 Columbia Street, Red Hook. Downbeat is at 9 p.m. for two sets of hot jazz, Western swing and skiffle, featuring standards from the Great American Songbook and vintage-inspired originals. It’s a $10 ticket/entry through the link below or at the door, no minimum, for two great bands that will put a smile on your face and keep your feet moving – there’s room for dancing, if you are so inclined.

Swing is the thing at our season finale. The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra keeps the spirit of jazz legend Illinois Jacquet alive with classic big-band tunes and blazing uptown energy. Always one of the best parties of the season, the night reaches its glorious peak when New York’s best dancers compete for the Ambassador Prize, an homage to Lindy hop icon Frankie Manning.

Meeting point on the beach in front of Caracas Rockaway, 105-01 Shorefront Parkway, Rockaway
Pre-party goers:
2 pm to 5 pm meet and hang out at Beach 105. Bring beach games, paddle balls, volley balls and Twister. It’s time to put your dance shoes on and have fun and party down at Low Tide Bar at 97th Street. 5-6 pm DJ Va Va Voon and during band breaks.
Due to erosion beach access is available in Beach 92 st or Beach 105 st. There is no access to the beach in front of 97th Street, meaning Low Tide Bar. Thankfully is a short walk!
