*Please note that most Monday night gigs listed above are probably off on 12/25, 1/1.  I advise checking with the venues if you’re inclined to go dancing those days, as I’ve not gotten confirmation yet from all of the band leaders.

Most NYC dance venues are generally crowded. Those marked with a * are restaurants and bars that have limited space to dance.

7:00-7:30 Learn a Short Solo Routine
7:30-10:00 Dance!
What is the ‘Short Solo Routine’?
You will be taught 8 counts of 8 (about a phrase) aka a short dance combo that you dance alone in a group of people learning. The idea is that you will be able to warm up with rhythm ad movement and then be ready for the dance. We do not perform this, it’s really just for fun.
Sliding Scale?
In short: Pay anywhere between $5-10, your choice. Reasoning/details: This is a donation based dance so we ask for people to chip in anywhere between $5-10 on DJed nights, $10-15 for band nights. The idea is that people put in based on what they get out of the night. Plus we don’t know anyone’s finances and want everyone to be able to come out dancing.

Pete and Paul, A Fargenign: Yiddish Swing Dance Party
* Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket Revue
* Pete Sokolow’s Yiddish-American Jass Band
* The Shvesters of Swing: Joanne Borts, Tamar Korn, Cilla Owens & Eleonor Reissa
In 1937, Yiddish swing swept the nation with the #1 hit by the Andrews Sisters, Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, the only Yiddish song ever to top the American charts. The craze launched a weekly radio show Yiddish Melodies in Swing, as well as the careers of the genre’s leading performers – the Barry Sisters. Yiddish New York celebrates this uniquely American art form with a special dance party. Music will be provided by acclaimed saxophonist Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket Revue and Pete Socolow’s Yiddish American Jass Band with renowned Yiddish vocalists/Broadway stars Eleanor Reissa (Indecent) and Joanne Borts (Once), the amazing jazz vocalists Tamar Korn (The Cangelosi Cards, Brain Cloud, Kornucopia) and Cilla Owens (“as smooth as Nancy Wilson, as authoritative as Sarah Vaughan, and as informed as Carmen McRae” Jazz Times).
Free to 6-day YNY registrants. Others may purchase tickets online soon or pay at the door.
Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center
107 Suffolk St, New York, New York 10002
**Eileen’s note: I do not know what kind of space there may/may not be. This came on my radar because of Tamar. I’d call the venue if you want more information.**

Central Park Flash Mob

If you haven’t seen this video before, please check it out. This blog is followed around the world, so please share within your local lindy scene. This post is in tribute to a dear friend who conceived and co-choreographed/directed this flash mob and introduced me to the Lindy Hop. If you can, please click through and watch it on YouTube, I’d like to see the view counter rise.
