Social Dance in the Dance Parade
With the Findyhoppers & Brooklyn Swings
Come swing it (or shake it) down the Dance Parade route with the Findyhoppers and Brooklyn Swings! Created in 2006 to protest the NY State Supreme Court ruling that upheld the 1926 Cabaret Law, which forbade social dancing because it was not considered an “expressive form of art”, this event is very near and dear to our hearts.
Many of us started dancing when the cabaret laws were still in effect, and establishments faced heavy fines or risk of shutting down if they were caught allowing *gasp* dancing to occur. The law was repealed, largely in part due to the Dance Parade’s advocacy and partnerships, and now we gather to celebrate all different kinds of dance forms and cultures!
We won’t have exact details until closer to the event but typically call time is around 11am.
Our color this year is BLUE!
What will be different this year: we will have a vehicle! Big Blue will return for Mermaid Parade but our trusty

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks
Big band jazz doesn’t get much bigger than Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks! Based out of New York City, The Nighthawks Orchestra is one of the world’s best known and most authentic champions of hot jazz music, the catchy and swinging style that set the clubs on fire in the 1920s and ’30s. Led by the GRAMMY Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Vince Giordano, the Orchestra has become a Hollywood favorite for their unparalleled skills at setting a period mood, playing a starring role in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire and performing in films like The Aviator, The Cotton Club, and Revolutionary Road. Taking a brief break from their weekly residency at Birdland, Giordano and his band stop by Lincoln Center’s Dance Floor for an evening of vintage big band excitement and ballroom dance. Show up early and our Dance Floor instructors will prepare you with some beginner foxtrot steps to have you warmed up for the band!

Things to know:
1) Our theme this year is Blizzard Prom! You (and anyone you bring with you) absolutely needs to wear some kind of costume. Creativity counts for way more than cost though, so think big and fun!
2) Everyone will need to register at https://www.coneyisland.com/mermaidparaderegistration. Our group number is GROUP-2025-53.
3) There is a $20 suggested donation, which will help with paying/tipping the band and other miscellaneous expenses (i.e. hardware for Big Blue, cups for water, etc… these seem small but they really do add up!)
4) Our main man-powered float, Big Blue, is reserved for the sound system and musicians’ cases this year. We will have one or two beach wagons for personal belongings, but please plan on packing very small and very light as space will be limited.

Catherine Russell With The Danny Jonokuchi Big Band
When you take one of the greatest jazz vocalists of this generation and put her on stage with one of the world’s premiere big bands, you get a night you’ll never forget! Trumpeter and bandleader Danny Jonokuchi’s 17-piece band is one of the most popular dance ensembles on the jazz scene, conjuring up the height of Savoy Ballroom swing. GRAMMY winner and three-time nominee jazz vocalist Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker born into musical royalty. Her father, Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist, bandleader, and Louis Armstrong’s longtime music director. During this special night, Catherine Russell will perform historic Louis Armstrong big band arrangements, newly restored by Jonokuchi, in partnership with the Louis Armstrong House Museum. You’ll hear songs performed live for the first time since the 1940s! Arrive early for a warm-up DJ session and lesson from our dance instructor and you’ll be ready to swing out on The Dance Floor.

K-Swing Wave
The impact of swing dance has reverberated around the world. Few countries have taken to swing quite like South Korea, where the cultural bridge uniting the United States dates back to the ’90s. Swing culture has erupted today into a bona fide sensation, with multiple swing clubs open to all hours in Seoul and the nation’s leading swing dancers are regarded as heroes. Eight of Korea’s most talented artists have band together to form K-Swing Wave, the pinnacle of Korea’s swing movement. Curated by Caleb Teicher, one of New York’s finest Lindy Hop dancers and choreographers, K-Swing’s live show is a dynamic presentation of authentic jazz and Lindy Hop infused with Korean cultural influences through cutting-edge choreography and improvisation. Witness history in the making as the exceptional members of K-Swing Wave redefine the boundaries of tradition and innovation. Arrive early for a participatory dance lesson and you too will be jumping and jiving with the stars!

Cait Jones
Jazz vocalist and swing dancer Cait Jones has captivated audiences worldwide with her “lovely voice, dead-on pitch, and subtle swing,” (Jazz Lives, Michael Steinman). For her headlining Summer for the City debut, Jones will be fronting her septet, with the musical direction of trombonist and bandleader, Mariel Bildsten. This will be the stateside premiere of some of Jones’ original music written with French composer Mathieu Najean from the pair’s first collaborative album, Outta the Blue with You (2023), a repertoire inspired by the great masters: Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Count Basie. The septet will also feature original arrangements of swing hits. Arrive early at The Dance Floor for a beginner’s swing lesson to pick up a few of the basic steps before the live music begins!

New York Lindy Exchange 2025 (NYLX) promises an exceptional lineup of engaging workshops and dance experiences. This year’s theme is: Lindy Hop – The Past is Prologue!
It’s time to not only celebrate the rich history of Lindy Hop, but also to explore its evolution into various dance styles. This event will delve into the African roots of Lindy Hop while showcasing how these foundational elements have contributed to the development of other dances and movements.
Participants can look forward to sessions led by some of the finest instructors in NYC that will enhance your Lindy Hop skills and musicality. Additionally, expect exciting sessions such as LINDY HOP TO HIP HOP, LINDY AS A FOUNDATION FOR HOUSE DANCE, LINE DANCING, BALBOA FOR LINDY DANCERS, DUNHAM JAZZ, LINDY HOP FAST DANCING, and more!
